Emotional Support Dog (ESD) began as a deeply personal journey, one that grew out of years of reflection, rediscovery, and reconnection. Through life’s twists and turns, I was searching for something genuine and fulfilling amid the pressures and expectations of a fast-paced world. This search brought me to music, dance, meaningful friendships, and – most unexpectedly – to a dog named Rosie, each of which played a unique role in reconnecting me with my true self.
At the heart of ESD is a powerful understanding of love in all its forms: love for others, love for music, self-love, and even the quiet, profound love from a companion animal. Rosie came into my life at a time when I felt lost, weighed down by the drive to fit into societal molds shaped by career, status, and the endless chase for success. In her gentle, steady presence, Rosie showed me what it means to be loved without expectation or judgment. She reminded me of the beauty in simply being there for each other, without words. Her unconditional support taught me that love doesn’t need to be earned; it’s something we can simply offer and receive, transforming the way we experience life.
With Rosie, I found a new freedom – to care for myself, to be at peace with who I am, and to reconnect with the world around me. She encouraged me to get outside, to move, to explore, and to rest. In her, I found a symbol of all the simple, essential things I had overlooked. Rosie reminded me that peace is found not in endless striving, but in the moments when we let go and just be. She embodied the emotional and physical freedom I had been seeking.
On June 9th, 2023, I had my first gig at the birthday party of Claus and Artyom. That same day, during a conversation with Sophie, my ex-girlfriend and at that time Rosie’s owner, I jokingly referred to myself as “DJ Emotional Support Dog.” It was that moment that sparked the development of the idea. As I reflected on it, I began to see how both Rosie’s presence and music offered a unique form of support that didn’t require words – simply being there, offering comfort, and allowing space for healing.
This realization led to the creation of Emotional Support Dog. I began to see how the emotional support I felt from Rosie mirrored the way music had always supported me – a form of comfort that is both grounding and freeing. In this connection, I realized that support isn’t about fixing or changing; it’s about being there, just as you are. Rosie’s support, like music, was healing in its simplicity and wholeness.
Emotional Support Dog was born from these realizations: that true support helps us let go of the expectations and identities that hold us back, encouraging us to embrace life with openness and authenticity. My journey with Rosie, music, and the small joys of life taught me that support doesn’t need to be complex. It’s about being present, sharing in the moment, and reconnecting with ourselves and each other in meaningful ways. ESD brings these elements together, creating a space where people can come as they are, gather to dance, play music, connect, and simply be.
Through ESD, I hope to share the same support and freedom that helped me, opening doors for others to explore their own paths with creativity and connection. Rosie’s spirit lives on in this project, a reminder of life’s simple joys and the beauty in letting go of old beliefs. Emotional Support Dog is a place for those ready to break free from limiting cycles, embrace life’s expansive possibilities, and reconnect with their true selves.
